The restaurant takes its name from the Mara River, which flows through Kenya and Tanzania, and its design reflects the broader atmosphere of Animal Kingdom Lodge. The space has a warm, savanna-like feel, with earthy colors, carved details, thatched textures, and a ceiling treatment that suggests a spreading tree canopy. It is not as dramatic as the resort’s soaring lobby or as refined as Jiko, but it feels connected to the same world: a lodge environment shaped by African art, wildlife, landscape, and hospitality.
The menu is practical but more interesting than a standard hotel food court. Current lunch and dinner offerings include a Combination Bowl with chermoula-spiced shrimp and oak-grilled chicken, a Chermoula-spiced Shrimp Bowl, a Harissa-spiced Beef Bowl, an Oak-grilled Chicken Bowl, a bacon cheddar burger with berbere spice, and other familiar resort items. Breakfast and snack menus round out the restaurant’s role as an all-day support venue, with refillable mugs, pastries, coffee, fruit, and grab-and-go items available for resort guests moving through different parts of their day.
The Mara has been part of Animal Kingdom Lodge since the resort opened on April 16, 2001. The hotel was designed as a major experiential resort, with savannas where guests could view animals, a museum-like collection of African art, and a dining lineup that included Jiko, Boma, and Mara from the beginning. Within that lineup, The Mara was never meant to be the culinary showpiece. Its importance came from giving the resort a flexible, approachable dining option that still carried enough African-inspired flavor to belong at Animal Kingdom Lodge.
The Mara remains valuable because it fills that role extremely well. It is convenient, family-friendly, casual, and themed enough to feel specific to Jambo House rather than generic. Guests may travel to Animal Kingdom Lodge for Boma, Jiko, or Sanaa, but The Mara is the restaurant that supports the daily rhythm of actually staying there: quick coffee, poolside lunch, mobile-order dinner, zebra domes from the refrigerated case, and a relaxed meal inside one of Walt Disney World’s most atmospheric resorts.
