Walt Disney World celebrates 55 years as resort enters one of its biggest periods of expansion

By | October 1, 2026

Walt Disney World officially turned 55 on October 1, 2026, marking the anniversary at a particularly transformative moment in the Florida resort’s history.

Magic Kingdom and the first Walt Disney World resort hotels opened to guests on October 1, 1971. Fifty-five years later, the property has grown into four theme parks, two water parks, dozens of hotels, Disney Springs and an enormous network of entertainment, recreation, dining and transportation facilities.

Disney marked the anniversary Thursday morning at Magic Kingdom with a brief celebration in front of Cinderella Castle.

Walt Disney World President Joe Schott appeared on the castle stage for remarks commemorating the occasion, joined by Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and other Disney characters.

The company also used the anniversary to emphasize just how much Walt Disney World has changed since its 50th anniversary five years ago.

According to Disney, more than 70 experiences have either opened or been refreshed at Walt Disney World since 2021. Disney characterizes that amount of development as nearly equivalent to adding another theme park’s worth of experiences.

Those additions include major attractions, restaurants, resort projects and entertainment spread throughout the property.

The anniversary also arrives with considerably more construction underway.

At Magic Kingdom, Disney is carrying out what it has described as the largest expansion in the park’s history. Piston Peak National Park is currently under construction on the former Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island site, while an entirely new Villains-themed land is planned beyond the existing park.

Piston Peak will introduce two Cars-inspired attractions, including Cars Ridge Run Rally and Miss Fritter’s Daredevil Spin Along.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom is undergoing its own major transformation.

The former DinoLand U.S.A. area is being redeveloped into Tropical Americas, a new land featuring attractions based on Encanto and Indiana Jones. The project represents one of the most extensive changes to Animal Kingdom since Pandora – The World of Avatar opened in 2017.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios is also changing significantly as Monstropolis takes shape.

The Monsters, Inc.-themed land is being developed as Disney continues reshaping portions of the park. Meanwhile, several additional projects and attraction updates are moving forward elsewhere around Walt Disney World.

Resort development is equally active.

disney's Lakeshore Lodge

Disney’s Lakeshore Lodge is under construction along Bay Lake near Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground and Disney’s Wilderness Lodge. Scheduled to open July 1, 2027, the Disney Vacation Club property occupies land with a long Walt Disney World history, including the former River Country water park site.

Disney highlighted that continued evolution in its official anniversary message, tying the current construction boom to Walt Disney’s original concept that the Florida property would continue changing over time.

The 55th anniversary itself is considerably more understated than the resort’s 50th anniversary celebration, which ran for 18 months beginning in 2021. Disney has introduced commemorative merchandise and marked the date in the parks, but October 1 has not launched another celebration on the scale of “The World’s Most Magical Celebration.”

That may be fitting considering how much of Walt Disney World is currently in transition.

The resort that opened in 1971 with one theme park and a small collection of hotels bears little resemblance to the property guests visit today. And with multiple new lands, attractions, resorts and entertainment projects currently moving through construction and development, the Walt Disney World of its 60th anniversary in 2031 could look considerably different again.

For Walt Disney World, 55 is therefore less a culmination than another snapshot in an ongoing transformation-something that has defined the resort almost continuously since its gates first opened on October 1, 1971.
