The Walt Disney World Railroad will temporarily stop running at Magic Kingdom this fall, with the attraction scheduled to close for refurbishment from Sept. 28 through Oct. 29, 2026. Disney currently lists the railroad as reopening to guests on Oct. 30.
The closure will take the entire railroad out of service for just over a month. Disney has characterized the work as a routine refurbishment and has not announced any major changes to the trains, stations or guest experience as part of the project.
When service resumes, the Walt Disney World Railroad will continue operating under its current modified arrangement rather than returning to its traditional full loop around Magic Kingdom.
The railroad is presently running as a shuttle between Main Street, U.S.A. and the Fantasyland station near Storybook Circus. Frontierland Station remains closed as extensive construction continues in the western portion of Magic Kingdom.
That modified operation is connected to Disney’s large-scale transformation of the former Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island area. The site is being redeveloped for Piston Peak National Park, a new Cars-themed section of Frontierland, while a separate Disney Villains land is also planned beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
Because of that construction, trains can no longer complete their familiar circuit around the park. Instead, guests board at either Main Street or Fantasyland and travel between the two operating stations before the train reverses direction.
Disney has not announced when full-loop railroad service or Frontierland Station will return. With major construction expected to continue for several years, the shuttle configuration is likely to remain in place well beyond the upcoming refurbishment.
The fall closure will affect guests visiting during much of October, including Magic Kingdom’s 55th anniversary on Oct. 1. Visitors during the refurbishment will need to rely on walking routes and other park transportation options rather than using the railroad to travel between Main Street and Fantasyland.
The Walt Disney World Railroad has been part of Magic Kingdom since the park opened in 1971 and remains closely connected with Walt Disney’s personal enthusiasm for trains. The attraction operates four restored narrow-gauge steam locomotives that were originally built between 1916 and 1928.
Disney’s official attraction description normally promotes the railroad as both a transportation option and a nostalgic experience, offering guests a leisurely journey aboard vintage steam trains. Before construction altered its route, the railroad traditionally circled the park with stops at Main Street, U.S.A., Frontierland and Fantasyland.
Temporary closures are not unusual for an attraction that relies on historic steam locomotives, track infrastructure and operating systems requiring regular maintenance. The upcoming downtime provides Disney with an extended window to complete work without daily train operations.
The railroad’s October reopening will come only days before another Frontierland attraction goes offline. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is scheduled to begin its own refurbishment on Nov. 2, creating a brief window when both attractions are expected to be operating at the same time.
For guests planning fall visits, the key dates are Sept. 28 through Oct. 29, when no Walt Disney World Railroad service is scheduled. The trains are currently expected to return Oct. 30, but they will continue traveling only between Main Street, U.S.A. and Fantasyland until Disney is ready to restore the full route.
