Disney fans may soon get their most detailed look yet at Piston Peak National Park, the Cars-themed expansion currently being developed for Magic Kingdom. Walt Disney Imagineering has teased a physical model being packed for D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, with clues strongly suggesting that the mystery display represents the upcoming Frontierland project.
In a video shared by Walt Disney Imagineering, Imagineers can be seen carefully wrapping and crating a large model for transportation to the Anaheim Convention Center. The footage does not provide a clear, complete look at the model or explicitly identify the project.
The biggest clue comes from the soundtrack, which evokes “Life Is a Highway,” the song closely associated with Disney and Pixar’s Cars. That choice has fueled expectations that the model is Piston Peak National Park.
Disney has not formally confirmed the model’s identity, so its connection to Piston Peak remains strongly suggested rather than officially announced. Fans will not have long to find out, however. D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event runs Aug. 14 through Aug. 16, 2026, at the Anaheim Convention Center and nearby Honda Center.
A Piston Peak model would fit naturally into Disney’s plans for the convention. Walt Disney Imagineering is preparing “Imagineering: Horizons,” which D23 describes as Imagineering’s largest-ever pavilion at the event. The show-floor experience is designed to give attendees a closer look at the people, creative process and projects shaping the future of Disney Parks around the world.
Piston Peak would be one of the most closely watched Walt Disney World projects represented there. Disney first announced a Cars-inspired addition to Frontierland during D23 in 2024, later revealing that the new setting would be called Piston Peak National Park.
Rather than recreating Radiator Springs from the Cars films, Imagineers are creating a fictional national park inspired by the Rocky Mountains and the landscapes and history of America’s national parks. Disney’s concept art shows towering peaks, waterways, waterfalls, geysers and dense wilderness surrounding the new area.
The land will also feature buildings including a visitor lodge and Ranger HQ. Imagineers are drawing inspiration from “Parkitecture,” the rustic architectural approach historically associated with structures designed to blend into national park environments.
Two attractions are planned for the Cars expansion. The larger experience will send guests on an off-road rally across rugged terrain, including mountain trails, geysers and muddy sections. A second attraction will be aimed at families and younger racers.
Construction preparations required significant changes to one of Magic Kingdom’s original areas. The Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island and the Liberty Square Riverboat permanently closed in July 2025 to make way for the expansion. Work has continued across the site as Disney prepares the land for its new landscape and attractions.
Until now, Disney’s public look at Piston Peak has largely relied on concept artwork and project descriptions. A detailed physical model could provide a much clearer sense of how the mountains, waterways, attraction buildings and pathways will fit together within the existing Magic Kingdom layout.
Physical models have long been an important part of Walt Disney Imagineering’s design process and have frequently become highlights of Disney’s convention exhibits. If the model teased in Imagineering’s latest video is indeed Piston Peak, D23 attendees could receive the best perspective yet on how dramatically this section of Frontierland will change.
With D23 opening Aug. 14, the mystery surrounding the carefully packed model should be resolved soon. For Walt Disney World fans following Magic Kingdom’s largest-ever expansion, Piston Peak is likely to be one of the projects drawing particularly close attention on the convention floor.
