New Dedicated Stroller Parking Area Opens Outside The Crystal Palace at Magic Kingdom

A small but potentially useful improvement has officially opened in one of Magic Kingdom’s busiest pedestrian areas.

Walt Disney World has completed a new dedicated stroller parking area beside The Crystal Palace, bringing an end to a project that had been hidden behind construction walls and landscaping barriers since July. The finished area opened for guest use on October 1 and is already being filled with strollers.

The new parking corral is located immediately to the right of The Crystal Palace entrance, between the restaurant and the heavily traveled walkway connecting the Cinderella Castle hub with Adventureland.

Rather than leaving the space completely open, Disney surrounded the stroller parking area with copper-colored railings. Fresh mulch and new landscaping help separate the parking area from the surrounding walkway and integrate it with the established landscaping around the restaurant.

It is a relatively modest project compared with the enormous construction taking place elsewhere in Magic Kingdom, but its location makes the change noteworthy for families visiting the park.

The Crystal Palace is a popular character-dining restaurant offering breakfast, lunch and dinner with Winnie the Pooh and friends. Disney recommends allowing approximately 90 minutes for the experience, meaning a large number of strollers can remain parked around the restaurant for extended periods throughout the day.

Until now, stroller parking frequently spilled along the nearby pedestrian route.

That walkway is particularly important because it serves guests moving between Main Street, U.S.A., the central hub and Adventureland. It can become especially congested during busy periods, before and after parades, and around nighttime fireworks.

Construction on the new area began during the summer.

In late July, Disney installed construction walls and rolling hedge planters beside The Crystal Palace and cleared existing vegetation from the site. At the time, Disney had not announced what was being built.

Because of the location and the existing stroller congestion around the restaurant, park observers suspected the project would eventually become dedicated stroller parking.

Work continued through August, when crews installed new pavement and a curb in the enclosed area. By late September, the primary construction walls had been removed, although rolling planters continued preventing guests from entering the newly resurfaced space.

Those final barriers have now disappeared, confirming the purpose of the project.

The finished stroller corral does not completely eliminate congestion around The Crystal Palace. On October 1, additional strollers and mobility devices were still being parked along the railing across the walkway after the new dedicated area had begun filling.

That suggests the new space may not have enough capacity to accommodate every stroller associated with the restaurant and surrounding attractions during busy periods.

Even so, moving a portion of those strollers away from the main pedestrian path should help Disney better organize an area where several major guest-traffic patterns intersect.

Stroller management is a surprisingly important operational consideration at Magic Kingdom.

Disney maintains designated stroller parking locations throughout the park, and Cast Members routinely reorganize strollers to maximize available space and keep walkways, attraction entrances and emergency access routes clear. Guests returning from an attraction or restaurant can sometimes find their stroller in a different position from where they originally parked it for precisely that reason.

The Crystal Palace project appears designed to provide a more permanent solution for one particularly crowded location.

It also illustrates the range of work currently underway at Magic Kingdom.

At the western side of the park, Disney is carrying out the massive Piston Peak National Park development on the former Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island site. Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress and the Walt Disney World Railroad are undergoing refurbishments, while other smaller maintenance and guest-flow projects continue around the park.

The new Crystal Palace stroller parking area will obviously not attract the attention of a new ride or restaurant. For families navigating Magic Kingdom with young children, however, it is the kind of practical operational improvement that can make one of the park’s busiest intersections a little easier to navigate.

And after more than two months behind barriers, the project is finally finished and serving guests.
