Old Key West Boat Transportation to Disney Springs Reopens After Latest Construction Closure

By | November 2, 2026

Guests staying at Disney’s Old Key West Resort can once again enjoy one of the property’s most convenient transportation options.

The Sassagoula River Cruise connecting Old Key West to Disney Springs resumed operations on November 2, 2026, following a temporary closure that began October 12.

The reopening restores direct boat transportation between the Disney Vacation Club resort and Disney Springs after several interruptions throughout 2026.

For guests who enjoy the scenic journey along the Sassagoula River, the return is welcome news, particularly as Walt Disney World enters its busy holiday season.

Another Chapter in a Year of Boat Transportation Interruptions

The latest closure was associated with ongoing construction along the waterway.

Disney suspended boat service between Old Key West and Disney Springs beginning October 12, with the interruption scheduled to continue through November 1.

During that period, guests could continue using complimentary bus transportation between the resort and Disney Springs.

The closure did not affect every Sassagoula River Cruise route. Boat transportation continued serving Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – Riverside, Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter, and Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa.

This was not the first interruption affecting Old Key West in 2026.

Earlier in the year, low water levels forced Disney to suspend service beginning in late April. Boats eventually resumed operating around June 18 after water levels improved.

Another interruption began July 20 as construction continued along the river. Although that closure was initially expected to last only a few weeks, service did not fully resume until September.

The October shutdown therefore represented another temporary loss of a transportation option that Old Key West guests had only recently regained.

Construction Along the Sassagoula River

The recurring interruptions have been associated with infrastructure improvements along the Sassagoula River, including work involving the waterway’s retaining walls.

These improvements are separate from the various building and room refurbishment projects taking place throughout Walt Disney World.

Work along an active transportation route can create complications even when the construction itself is not directly visible to guests.

Boats require adequate clearance, safe docking conditions, and sufficient water depth to operate.

Disney has not announced that all construction along the river is complete. The reopening confirms that the Old Key West route is operating again, but it should not be interpreted as confirmation that every related infrastructure project has concluded.

What the Reopening Means for Resort Guests

The return of the Sassagoula River Cruise gives Old Key West guests another convenient way to reach Disney Springs without driving.

Unlike the resort’s buses, the boats provide a scenic journey along the waterways connecting several Disney Resort hotels with the shopping and dining district.

Old Key West is particularly well suited to this transportation option because of its waterfront setting and relaxed Florida Keys-inspired atmosphere.

The resort opened in 1991 as Disney Vacation Club’s original property and remains one of the most distinctive accommodations at Walt Disney World.

Its sprawling layout, residential-style villas, and location near Disney Springs have long made the property popular with guests seeking a quieter resort experience.

The boat transportation complements that atmosphere.

Guests can board near the resort’s Hospitality House area and travel directly to Disney Springs, where restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues are located throughout the Marketplace, Town Center, Landing, and West Side districts.

Transportation Restrictions Still Apply

Although boat service has returned, guests should be aware of Disney’s current transportation policies.

Walt Disney World may require guests boarding boats at Disney Springs for a Disney Resort hotel to show a valid resort room key, dining reservation, or experience reservation.

Guests traveling to a resort for a qualifying reservation may generally board within two hours of their scheduled reservation time.

These restrictions are intended to reserve transportation capacity for guests staying at or visiting the resorts for legitimate activities.

Boat operations also remain subject to weather and water conditions.

Disney has not guaranteed uninterrupted service for the remainder of the year, so guests should confirm the current transportation schedule before relying on the boats for time-sensitive plans.

For now, however, the November 2 reopening restores a familiar and enjoyable part of the Old Key West experience.
