UP! A Great Bird Adventure

UP! A Great Bird Adventure was a bird-focused live stage show in the Asia section of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, presented in the Caravan Theater in Anandapur. It opened on April 22, 2018, as part of the park’s 20th-anniversary year, replacing the long-running Flights of Wonder. The show kept the basic idea of a free-flying bird demonstration but wrapped it in a Pixar character framework, with Russell and Dug from Up joining the presentation as Wilderness Explorer guides.

The show’s central appeal was its animal behavior. Birds flew over the audience, responded to cues, demonstrated natural abilities, and allowed guests to see species such as parrots, hawks, falcons, ibises, and other exotic birds in a theatrical but educational setting. The character overlay gave the experience a lighter, more kid-friendly tone than its predecessor. Russell’s Wilderness Explorer identity fit naturally with Animal Kingdom’s conservation message, while Dug added comic energy and a direct connection to one of Pixar’s most beloved films.

Historically, UP! A Great Bird Adventure represented a shift in how Animal Kingdom presented its educational shows. Flights of Wonder, which opened with the park in 1998 and ran until the end of 2017, was built more around animal care, conservation, and the expertise of bird handlers. The Up version attempted to broaden that format by adding familiar characters and a clearer story hook, reflecting Disney’s growing interest in using film brands to make animal-focused experiences more immediately recognizable to casual guests.

The result was somewhat polarizing. Families with young children often appreciated the presence of Russell and Dug, and the bird demonstrations themselves remained impressive. Longtime Animal Kingdom fans, however, sometimes preferred the more straightforward tone of Flights of Wonder, which had treated the birds and their trainers as the true stars of the show. UP! A Great Bird Adventure therefore became an example of the ongoing tension within Animal Kingdom: balancing character-driven Disney entertainment with the park’s original emphasis on animals, environments, and conservation education.

The show effectively ended with the 2020 Walt Disney World closure and was replaced by Feathered Friends in Flight!, which continues the free-flying bird-show tradition in the same theater without the Up character framing. Disney’s current Animal Kingdom entertainment lineup lists Feathered Friends in Flight! as the active bird show in Asia.

Today, UP! A Great Bird Adventure is remembered as a transitional Animal Kingdom attraction. It did not have the long-running reputation of Flights of Wonder, but it preserved a valuable live-animal presentation during a period when the park was leaning more heavily into recognizable Disney and Pixar stories. Its legacy rests on that blend: part educational bird show, part Pixar character experience, and part snapshot of Animal Kingdom’s changing identity in the late 2010s.
