Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground is one of the most distinctive places to stay at Walt Disney World. Rather than a traditional hotel, the sprawling Magic Kingdom-area resort is a wooded retreat along Bay Lake, filled with pine and cypress trees, winding roads, rustic outposts, and campsites that can accommodate everything from tents to large recreational vehicles. Its relaxed atmosphere can feel surprisingly removed from the theme parks, even though boats provide convenient transportation between the resort and Magic Kingdom.

The resort is currently divided into two primary accommodation categories. The Campsites at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort include several campsite types, with options for RVs, tents, sewage hookups, and preferred locations closer to the marina. The Cabins at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort offer a more comfortable alternative for guests who want the outdoor setting without bringing camping equipment. A new generation of one-bedroom cabin villas began opening in phases in July 2024 as part of Disney Vacation Club. Each cabin sleeps up to six guests and includes a kitchen, living area, bedroom, private patio deck, and subtle Disney touches.

Fort Wilderness opened on November 19, 1971, several weeks after the debut of Magic Kingdom and Walt Disney World’s first two hotels. Its original concept extended the frontier atmosphere of the parks into a complete vacation environment. One of its most fondly remembered early features was the Fort Wilderness Railway, a narrow-gauge train that transported guests around the campground from 1973 until 1980.

Recreation remains central to the Fort Wilderness experience. Guests can rent golf carts to navigate the expansive grounds, visit Tri-Circle-D Ranch, take horseback or pony rides, go fishing, rent boats, try archery, or attend Chip ’n’ Dale’s Campfire Sing-A-Long. The Meadow Swimmin’ Pool and Wilderness Swimmin’ Pool provide additional places to slow down between park days.

The resort is also home to Pioneer Hall and Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue, the long-running dinner show that debuted in 1974. With its frontier-style comedy, live music, fried chicken, ribs, and strawberry shortcake, Hoop-Dee-Doo has become one of Walt Disney World’s most enduring traditions.

Today, Fort Wilderness is valued precisely because it does not feel like a typical Disney resort. Its combination of history, recreation, natural surroundings, and devoted repeat visitors gives it a distinct identity that has remained remarkably resilient for more than five decades.
