Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy was a short indoor show at Disney’s Hollywood Studios that brought Pixar’s Cars franchise to the Sunset Showcase theater on Sunset Boulevard. The attraction opened on March 31, 2019, placing guests in the role of rookie racers attending a high-tech lesson from Lightning McQueen himself. It was positioned near Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster and gave the park a family-friendly, air-conditioned offering during a period when Hollywood Studios was rapidly evolving with additions such as Toy Story Land, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, and Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway.
The show’s centerpiece was a full-scale animated Lightning McQueen figure placed onstage in front of a massive wraparound racing simulator screen. The screen stretched more than 200 feet from end to end and stood nearly two stories tall, surrounding the audience with racetrack visuals, Radiator Springs locations, and appearances by characters from the films. The format was straightforward: Lightning shared racing wisdom with the audience before Chick Hicks interfered with the simulator, forcing Lightning to prove himself in a virtual race with help from Mater, Cruz Ramirez, and other Cars friends.

Outside the theater, the courtyard extended the Cars presence with character and entertainment offerings, including Cruz Ramirez and DJ’s Ready! Set! Party Time! The overall experience was not a major headliner, but it served a clear purpose in the park’s lineup. It was low-intensity, accessible to young children, and especially appealing to families with preschoolers or dedicated Cars fans who wanted to see Lightning McQueen represented beyond merchandise and meet-and-greets.
Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy also reflected a particular phase of Disney’s Hollywood Studios history, when the park was moving away from its old “working studio” identity and toward lands and shows based on recognizable franchises. Unlike the elaborate Cars Land at Disney California Adventure, this was a comparatively compact use of the property: a theater show built around one impressive character figure, large-scale media, and familiar film personalities.
The attraction gave its final performance on October 7, 2024. Disney announced that Sunset Showcase would be transformed into the Magic Mirror-inspired setting for Disney Villains: Unfairly Ever After, which opened on May 27, 2025.
Today, Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy is remembered as a modest but useful Hollywood Studios attraction: not groundbreaking, but colorful, efficient, and memorable for giving Lightning McQueen a true onstage role at Walt Disney World.
