Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith was one of Disney’s Hollywood Studios’ defining thrill rides for more than a quarter century, bringing a loud, high-speed jolt of rock-and-roll energy to Sunset Boulevard. Dedicated on July 29, 1999, and opened to the public the next day, it was Walt Disney World’s first coaster to feature a high-speed launch and multiple inversions, instantly giving the Studios a true adrenaline headliner alongside The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror.
The attraction’s story was classic late-1990s Hollywood Studios: guests entered G-Force Records, watched Aerosmith wrap up a recording session, and were suddenly invited to join the band at a concert across town. The solution was a “super-stretch” limousine, which launched riders from 0 to roughly 60 mph in a matter of seconds before sending them through a dark, neon-lit version of Los Angeles. Freeway signs, glowing landmarks, onboard audio, and Aerosmith tracks turned the coaster into something between a music video, a backstage fantasy, and a high-speed nighttime drive.

Part of the ride’s staying power came from how well it fit its corner of the park. Sunset Boulevard had a glamorous, show-business edge, and Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster pushed that identity into louder, flashier territory. The giant red guitar outside the entrance became one of Hollywood Studios’ most recognizable visual icons, while the indoor coaster format gave the attraction a sense of mystery: guests could hear the launch and screams before fully understanding what they were about to experience.
Historically, the ride also marked a major step in Disney World’s thrill evolution. Earlier Disney coasters like Space Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad were beloved but comparatively family-friendly. Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster felt more aggressive, more contemporary, and more directly aimed at teens and adults, helping Hollywood Studios compete as a park with legitimate thrill appeal.
The Aerosmith version closed permanently after its final day of operation on March 1, 2026, as Disney prepared the attraction for its Muppets transformation. The reimagined version, Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets, opened May 26, 2026, keeping the ride system’s high-speed foundation while replacing the Aerosmith premise with Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem.
Today, Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith is remembered as a signature Hollywood Studios attraction of the late Disney-MGM and early Hollywood Studios eras: brash, kinetic, deeply 1990s in personality, and beloved for turning a simple concert rush into one of Walt Disney World’s most memorable coaster experiences.
