Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano was a long-running table-service restaurant at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, located in the Grand Avenue area near Muppet*Vision 3D and Star Tours. It opened on September 26, 1991, when the park was still Disney-MGM Studios, replacing the short-lived Studio Pizzeria in the same general location. For more than three decades, it served as the park’s primary Italian-American sit-down restaurant, offering pasta, flatbreads, chicken, seafood, steak, and other comfort-food staples in a setting that blended California backlot style with Italian neighborhood-restaurant warmth.
The restaurant’s fictional backstory centered on “Mama Melrose,” a Sicilian-born cook who came to Hollywood to become a star but found her calling feeding actors, directors, and studio crews. That premise explained the restaurant’s eclectic interior: brick walls, hanging string lights, mismatched lamps, Italian posters, wine bottles, movie memorabilia, kitchen clutter, and photographs that made the space feel like a tucked-away backlot hangout discovered by word of mouth. It was cozy, dim, and intentionally busy-looking, with a personality that contrasted nicely against the larger, more theatrical restaurants elsewhere in the park.
Historically, Mama Melrose’s occupied an interesting place in Disney-MGM Studios’ early-1990s expansion. It sat near the Muppet area and was developed during the same period when the park was adding more permanent guest capacity beyond its opening-day lineup. Its location was once connected to broader ideas for a Muppet Studios area, and while the final restaurant was not overtly Muppet-themed, it still carried that early Studios spirit of movie-lot humor, backstage fiction, and layered set dressing.
For many guests, Mama Melrose’s was useful more than spectacular. It offered an indoor, air-conditioned table-service meal in a park where dining options could be uneven, and it was also part of the Fantasmic! Dining Package, which made it strategically valuable for families planning an evening at the show. The food was approachable rather than adventurous, but the restaurant filled a clear niche: familiar Italian-American dining in a relaxed Hollywood backlot setting.
Mama Melrose’s closed permanently after service on May 10, 2025, as Disney began clearing the surrounding area for the upcoming Monsters, Inc. land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Today, it is remembered as a dependable, atmospheric piece of the park’s Disney-MGM era—never the flashiest restaurant on property, but one with enough warmth, oddball detail, and old Studios character to earn real nostalgia from longtime guests.
