Park: Hollywood Studios Grand Avenue

Grand Avenue is a themed area at Disney’s Hollywood Studios that has served as one of the park’s clearest examples of transition. Opened in 2017, the area was created from the former Muppets Courtyard and a remaining portion of Streets of America, giving that corner of the park a new identity inspired by the revitalized neighborhoods of downtown Los Angeles. Its design used brickwork, warehouse façades, office-building details, murals, and repurposed-industrial styling to create a lived-in urban environment rather than a traditional studio backlot.

The area’s most visible dining and entertainment lineup originally included Muppet*Vision 3D, PizzeRizzo, Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano, and BaseLine Tap House. That mix made Grand Avenue feel like two ideas layered together. On one hand, it preserved the Muppets presence that had been part of the park since the early 1990s. On the other, it introduced a more modern California craft-beer and neighborhood-bar sensibility through BaseLine Tap House, which occupied the former Writer’s Stop space and quickly became one of the park’s most popular casual adult stops.

Historically, Grand Avenue mattered because it arrived during a massive reinvention of Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The park had lost much of its original working-studio premise, Streets of America was being removed, and new immersive lands such as Toy Story Land and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge were reshaping the park around major franchises. Grand Avenue acted as a bridge between old and new Hollywood Studios. It retained some studio-era texture while creating a cleaner pathway toward Galaxy’s Edge and the park’s expanding west side.

Its Muppets connection also gave it emotional weight. Muppet*Vision 3D was one of the park’s most beloved legacy attractions and one of Jim Henson’s final projects. For many guests, Grand Avenue was less about downtown Los Angeles theming and more about the last full corner of Hollywood Studios where the Muppets still had a physical home.

That changed in 2025, when Disney began closing major Grand Avenue venues to prepare the area for a new Monsters, Inc.-themed land. As a result, Grand Avenue’s reputation is now tied closely to both nostalgia and redevelopment. It represents a brief but important chapter in Hollywood Studios history: a transitional land that preserved the Muppets for a time, introduced BaseLine Tap House, and helped carry the park from its studio-backlot past into its franchise-driven future.
