Disney Extends BoardWalk and Old Key West Refurbishments, With Major Pool Closure Coming in 2027

By | October 4, 2026

Two ongoing Walt Disney World resort refurbishment projects are lasting longer than originally expected, and one of the changes could have a substantial impact on guests staying at Disney’s BoardWalk early next year.

Disney has updated its refurbishment information for Disney’s BoardWalk Inn and Disney’s BoardWalk Villas, confirming that work in select areas will now continue through 2027.

The resort’s Luna Park Pool complex will also undergo its own extended closure beginning January 11, 2027.

From that date through April 2027, Luna Park Pool, the Luna Park Crazy Play Area and Leaping Horse Libations will all be unavailable for routine maintenance. Disney warns that guests may see and hear construction taking place during daytime hours.

The good news is that swimming will not disappear from the BoardWalk entirely.

Disney says both of the resort’s leisure pools-the Villas Pool and Inn Pool-remain open throughout the Luna Park work. Guests will therefore still have access to pools, but they will temporarily lose the resort’s primary themed swimming complex and its major recreation features.

That distinction could matter considerably to families planning winter and spring vacations.

Luna Park Pool is the BoardWalk’s 184,217-gallon feature pool and is themed after the seaside amusement parks of the 1920s. Its centerpiece is the Keister Coaster, a 200-foot-long waterslide, while the surrounding area includes elephant fountains, a children’s pool and whirlpool spa.

The adjoining Luna Park Crazy Play Area provides another recreation option for younger guests.

Leaping Horse Libations will disappear along with them for the duration of the maintenance project.

The carousel-themed pool bar currently operates beside Luna Park Pool and serves sandwiches, snacks and beverages along with specialty cocktails, frozen drinks, beer, wine and sangria.

Disney’s official dining page now carries the same January 11-through-April closure notice, confirming that the restaurant will be unavailable rather than merely operating independently from the pool construction.

The refurbishment extension is part of a much larger transformation that has been unfolding around Disney’s BoardWalk for several years.

Disney has refreshed guest rooms and public areas, while the entertainment district outside has undergone its own dramatic changes. The Cake Bake Shop replaced the former ESPN Club, Blue Ribbon Corn Dogs opened along the promenade, Jellyrolls closed after nearly three decades, and the former Atlantic Dance Hall has transitioned away from regular public nightlife operations.

Hurly-Burly has now opened in the former Jellyrolls building, introducing a combination of daytime family entertainment and adults-only live music at night.

The hotel refurbishment itself had previously been described as continuing through late 2026. Disney’s updated resort information now explicitly says refurbishment work will take place in select areas of Disney’s BoardWalk Inn and Disney’s BoardWalk Villas “now through 2027.”

Disney has not provided an exact final completion date for all of that work.

The timing also creates another transportation consideration for guests staying at BoardWalk in January.

Disney has scheduled the Skyliner for its annual refurbishment from January 24 through January 30, 2027. During that period, complimentary bus transportation will be provided.

That means guests staying at BoardWalk between January 24 and 30 could simultaneously encounter the Luna Park Pool closure, ongoing resort refurbishment and the temporary Skyliner shutdown.

BoardWalk guests can still walk or take boats to EPCOT and Disney’s Hollywood Studios, so the transportation impact there is less severe than it will be for Skyliner-dependent resorts such as Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort and Disney’s Riviera Resort.

BoardWalk is not the only resort where work is taking longer than initially planned.

Disney’s Old Key West Resort is also undergoing exterior maintenance around Hospitality House, the central hub containing the resort lobby and several major guest services.

That project had originally been scheduled to finish by mid-September 2026. Updated reporting now indicates that completion has shifted to sometime this fall.

Hospitality House is particularly important at Old Key West because it functions as the heart of the sprawling Disney Vacation Club resort.

The surrounding area includes the front desk, Olivia’s Cafe, Conch Flats General Store, the Sandcastle Pool and transportation facilities. During the exterior project, Disney has warned that guests may see or hear work during daytime hours and may occasionally be directed along alternate walking routes.

Another Old Key West project is happening nearby.

Disney’s Lake Buena Vista Golf Course is temporarily closed for renovation through October 2026, and Disney warns that views from some Old Key West rooms overlooking the course may be affected until that work is finished.

Neither resort refurbishment represents a full hotel closure, and Disney continues accepting reservations at both properties.

Still, the BoardWalk announcement is particularly important for anyone considering a stay between January and April 2027.

A leisure pool can provide somewhere to swim, but it is not an equivalent replacement for the resort’s primary themed pool, 200-foot waterslide, children’s recreation area and poolside food-and-beverage location.

Guests who consider those amenities an important part of their Walt Disney World resort experience should factor the closure into their hotel choice.

The refurbishment calendar also remains somewhat fluid.

Disney has provided an April 2027 endpoint for the Luna Park Pool complex maintenance but has not specified an exact reopening date. Likewise, the broader BoardWalk refurbishment is now described simply as continuing through 2027.

For a resort that has already undergone years of changes, that means the transformation is not quite finished yet.

And beginning January 11, one of the BoardWalk’s most prominent recreation areas will temporarily join the construction list.
