Journey of Water

Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana is an interactive outdoor exploration trail located in EPCOT’s World Nature neighborhood. Rather than placing guests aboard a ride vehicle, the attraction encourages them to move at their own pace through a lushly landscaped environment where water appears to possess the playful personality seen in Disney’s 2016 animated film Moana. Visitors can wave to water, offer it a high five, trigger fountains, and experiment with interactive streams as they follow its journey from the sky to the oceans and back again.

The attraction is structured around the global water cycle, giving it a stronger educational component than its character-based theme might initially suggest. Each section explores a different stage of water’s movement through the natural world while reinforcing the importance of conservation and responsible stewardship. Guests can choose how fully they want to participate: wetter paths invite more direct interaction, while a dry route allows visitors to explore the setting without being sprayed or soaked. The dry path also provides wheelchair access.

Journey of Water rewards careful observation. Characters including Pua, Hei Hei, and Moana are incorporated into the surrounding rockwork, while the trail’s visual centerpiece is a large topiary-style representation of Te Fiti framed by tropical foliage and views of Spaceship Earth. A dedicated Moana character-greeting area is located near the attraction’s entrance, further establishing the area as the wayfinder’s principal home at EPCOT.

The attraction was announced in 2019 as part of EPCOT’s multi-year transformation and as the first Disney Parks attraction inspired by Moana. It officially opened on October 16, 2023, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of The Walt Disney Company. Its location in World Nature places it near The Land and The Seas with Nemo & Friends, two longstanding EPCOT pavilions that also explore humanity’s relationship with the natural environment.

Today, Journey of Water occupies an interesting position within modern EPCOT. It is not a major thrill ride or a traditional dark ride, but a contemporary interpretation of the park’s original edutainment philosophy. By combining a popular Disney character with tactile play, layered landscaping, and an accessible explanation of the water cycle, it offers a family-friendly experience that feels both new and recognizably EPCOT.
