Leave A Legacy was one of EPCOT’s most visually distinctive and controversial entrance features, created as part of the park’s Millennium Celebration era. Introduced on October 1, 1999, the program allowed guests to purchase tiny etched photo tiles, usually showing individual faces, couples, families, or friends, which were then mounted onto large stone-and-metal monuments in the EPCOT entrance plaza. The idea was ambitious and sentimental: visitors could literally leave a personal mark at a park built around global community, human progress, and the future.
The installation sat directly in front of Spaceship Earth, dramatically changing the arrival experience for more than a generation of EPCOT guests. Instead of the original open approach to the geodesic icon, visitors passed through a field of tall granite monoliths covered with thousands of small steel portraits. To some guests, the display was moving—a massive mosaic of real people connected to EPCOT’s message of shared humanity. To others, it was visually heavy, awkwardly placed, and a poor fit for the clean futurism of the park’s entrance.
That divided reaction became a major part of Leave A Legacy’s reputation. The individual tiles carried deep emotional value for the families who purchased them, but the monuments themselves were frequently criticized by fans who felt they cluttered one of Walt Disney World’s most important visual gateways. The program ended in 2007, but the structures remained for years, making them a long-lasting reminder of EPCOT’s turn-of-the-millennium identity.
Leave A Legacy’s original plaza display was eventually removed as part of EPCOT’s broader entrance and central spine transformation. Importantly, Disney did not discard the guest tiles. Instead, they were relocated to a new display outside the park’s main entrance touch points, preserving the personal memorial aspect while restoring a more open view of Spaceship Earth. Today, guests can still search for tiles using Disney’s digital finder system at the display.
Historically, Leave A Legacy is fascinating because it captures EPCOT at a transitional moment. It was optimistic, participatory, corporate, sentimental, and visually debatable all at once. Its current-day notoriety rests on that tension. For some, it is a cherished family keepsake embedded in Disney history; for others, it is remembered as one of the most controversial design choices ever placed at a Walt Disney World park entrance.
