Star Wars Launch Bay

Star Wars Launch Bay was a walk-through attraction and character destination in Disney’s Hollywood Studios’ Animation Courtyard. Opening on December 1, 2015, it arrived alongside the renewed excitement surrounding Star Wars: The Force Awakens and gave Walt Disney World a substantial new Star Wars presence while the far more ambitious Galaxy’s Edge was still years away. The attraction occupied the former home of The Magic of Disney Animation, repurposing much of the building as a combination museum, preview center, meet-and-greet complex, theater, and merchandise location.

Inside, guests could examine costumes, spacecraft models, lightsabers, helmets, artwork, and other displays representing both the light and dark sides of the saga. Early exhibits placed particular emphasis on the newest films, but the collection changed as additional Star Wars projects were released. Separate environments were created for character encounters, allowing guests to visit Chewbacca in a makeshift Rebel base or confront Darth Vader within an imposing Imperial setting. The lineup evolved over time to include Kylo Ren and BB-8, while Stormtroopers occasionally patrolled the building and interacted with visitors.

Launch Bay was never intended to rival a major ride. Its appeal came from providing relatively direct access to characters and physical artifacts from the films. For dedicated fans, the detailed models and costumes rewarded close examination; for families, the character greetings were the main event. Launch Bay Cargo added collectibles and franchise merchandise, reinforcing the building’s function as a centralized Star Wars headquarters within the park.

Historically, the attraction served as an important bridge between two eras. Hollywood Studios had already featured Star Tours and the popular Star Wars Weekends, but Launch Bay helped transform the franchise into a year-round park presence. When Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opened in 2019, guests could finally enter a fully realized galactic environment, making Launch Bay’s exhibition-based format feel increasingly modest. Even so, its use of characters from different periods of the saga offered a flexibility that Galaxy’s Edge’s original Batuu timeline did not.

Star Wars Launch Bay permanently closed in September 2025 as Animation Courtyard began its transformation into The Walt Disney Studios. Its former building is being reworked for a new version of The Magic of Disney Animation, scheduled to open in late summer 2026, bringing the location full circle to its animation-centered roots.

Today, Launch Bay is remembered as a transitional attraction: less immersive than Galaxy’s Edge, but valuable during a period when Hollywood Studios was rapidly reinventing itself around the Star Wars franchise.
