Star Traders is one of Tomorrowland’s principal merchandise locations at Magic Kingdom, occupying a prominent position near Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Café, Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, and the pathway connecting Tomorrowland with Fantasyland. The shop sits beneath the elevated track of the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover, which carries riders directly through and above portions of the retail space. Today, Star Traders offers a broad assortment of Disney character apparel, accessories, toys, plush, and general park souvenirs rather than merchandise devoted exclusively to science fiction or outer space.
The location’s history stretches back to Magic Kingdom’s opening day. On October 1, 1971, the store debuted as Mickey’s Mart, a Tomorrowland souvenir shop that also sold practical vacation necessities. It operated under that name until June 27, 1991, when Disney prepared the location for a new identity. The following day, it reopened as Mickey’s Star Traders, retaining Mickey Mouse as its central personality while adopting a name better suited to Tomorrowland’s interplanetary setting. The store was also historically associated with Coppertone, reflecting an era when many Walt Disney World shops and attractions carried visible corporate sponsorships.
For much of its life as Mickey’s Star Traders, the shop balanced futuristic architecture with unmistakably Disney character-driven merchandising. Its name suggested a cosmic trading post operated by Mickey, and the exterior signage gave the location considerably more individual personality than a conventional gift shop. It was also woven into the larger Tomorrowland environment: guests could enter from multiple directions, use it as an air-conditioned passage through the land, or look down into the store while riding the PeopleMover.
In November 2019, the location was renamed simply Star Traders during a refurbishment that introduced cleaner signage and removed Mickey’s name from the storefront. The change aligned the shop more closely with Tomorrowland’s updated visual palette, though it also reduced some of the playful character identity longtime visitors associated with Mickey’s Star Traders.
Today, Star Traders is more useful than destination-worthy: a convenient, spacious place to browse contemporary Disney merchandise while moving through Tomorrowland. Its importance lies partly beneath the surface, however. The store preserves an unbroken retail lineage dating to Magic Kingdom’s first day and illustrates how Tomorrowland has evolved from the corporate futurism of Mickey’s Mart, through the colorful character branding of Mickey’s Star Traders, to the streamlined, flexible retail environment seen today.
