KiteTails was a daytime lagoon show presented at Disney’s Animal Kingdom during Walt Disney World’s 50th Anniversary celebration. Staged around the Discovery River Amphitheater, the production featured oversized character kites, colorful windcatchers, music, performers, and watercraft that pulled enormous flying figures across the lagoon. It officially debuted on October 1, 2021, the same day the resort’s anniversary celebration began.
The show was built around Disney animal characters, making it a natural fit for Animal Kingdom. Two main versions were performed: one inspired by The Lion King and another inspired by The Jungle Book. Guests could see massive kites representing characters such as Simba, Zazu, Baloo, and King Louie, with some figures reportedly reaching about 30 feet in length. The soundtrack leaned into familiar music from the films, including songs such as “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King,” “Hakuna Matata,” “The Bare Necessities,” and “I Wanna Be Like You.”
KiteTails occupied the Discovery River theater space previously associated with Rivers of Light, Animal Kingdom’s former nighttime spectacular. That made the show significant even before its debut: it represented Disney’s attempt to reuse a large lagoon venue in a park where nighttime entertainment has always been complicated by animal-care considerations. Unlike Rivers of Light, KiteTails was deliberately presented during the day, relying on bright colors, movement, music, and large-scale kinetic imagery rather than fireworks or heavy nighttime effects.
The show quickly became one of Walt Disney World’s more unusual recent entertainment offerings. Its most memorable feature was also its most infamous: the giant kites landed by intentionally crashing onto a designated backstage-style landing area near the amphitheater. While this was part of the operating design, videos of Simba and other characters sliding, bouncing, or collapsing after flight spread widely online, turning KiteTails into an unexpected source of Disney fan memes.
Disney later shortened and reformatted the production into briefer, more frequent performances viewable from multiple locations around Discovery River Lagoon. The final version operated more like a walk-by atmosphere show than a full seated spectacular. Disney announced that the last flight for KiteTails would be September 30, 2022, after which Animal Kingdom shifted the lagoon entertainment focus back toward character flotillas.
Today, KiteTails is remembered as a strange but fascinating piece of 50th-anniversary-era Walt Disney World: visually ambitious, operationally awkward, occasionally beautiful, and undeniably memorable.
