Tokyo Dining was a former table-service restaurant in EPCOT’s Japan Pavilion, located on the second floor above the Mitsukoshi Department Store and beside Teppan Edo. For many years, it served as the pavilion’s more contemporary Japanese dining option, offering sushi, tempura, grilled entrées, seafood, rice dishes, and views over World Showcase Lagoon.
The restaurant’s setting was one of its defining strengths. The Japan Pavilion is one of EPCOT’s original World Showcase pavilions, opening with the park in 1982, and it has always been known for its layered architecture, gardens, torii gate, pagoda, department store, and strong cultural presentation. Tokyo Dining occupied a quieter upstairs space within that environment, giving guests a more restrained alternative to the showier teppanyaki experience next door at Teppan Edo. Where Teppan Edo centered on chefs cooking at communal grill tables, Tokyo Dining focused more on sushi, plated meals, and a calmer dining-room atmosphere.
Tokyo Dining’s modern identity came out of the 2007 refurbishment that reshaped the Japan Pavilion’s upstairs restaurants. The former dining spaces were reorganized into Teppan Edo and Tokyo Dining, creating two distinct table-service experiences under the same general roof. Tokyo Dining leaned into a cleaner, more contemporary aesthetic, with large windows, simple lines, and a brighter feel than many of World Showcase’s more heavily themed restaurants. Its lagoon views also made it especially appealing at dinner, when guests could enjoy a meal above the movement of the promenade.
Tokyo Dining reflected EPCOT’s broader approach to World Showcase dining: restaurants were not just places to eat, but part of how the park expressed culture, hospitality, and atmosphere. It also showed the long partnership between the Japan Pavilion and Mitsukoshi, whose retail and restaurant operations have helped make the pavilion one of EPCOT’s most robust cultural areas.
Tokyo Dining closed in 2022 and was replaced by Shiki-Sai: Sushi Izakaya in 2023. That change gave the space a more festival-inspired, izakaya-style identity with a stronger emphasis on seasonal Japanese celebrations and shareable dining. Today, Tokyo Dining is remembered as a quieter chapter in the Japan Pavilion’s restaurant history: polished, scenic, sushi-focused, and valued by guests who wanted a more relaxed meal above one of EPCOT’s most beautiful World Showcase settings.
