Park: Epcot World Discovery

World Discovery is EPCOT’s action-and-innovation neighborhood, occupying much of the former Future World East side of the park. Where classic Future World once organized this area around large pavilions devoted to transportation, energy, space, and health, World Discovery reframes those ideas through motion, exploration, science fiction, engineering, and high-thrill storytelling.

The neighborhood’s biggest modern anchor is Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, the indoor storytelling coaster that replaced the former Universe of Energy pavilion. Its arrival marked one of the clearest signs of EPCOT’s modern direction: a shift from corporate-sponsored educational epics toward large-scale Disney and Marvel-driven experiences that still use technology, motion, and discovery as thematic bridges. Cosmic Rewind is not a traditional EPCOT pavilion attraction, but its massive ride system, space-travel premise, and “Wonders of Xandar” framing connect it loosely to the park’s long-running fascination with science, energy, and the cosmos.

Nearby, Mission: SPACE continues EPCOT’s space-exploration lineage with its simulated astronaut training missions. The attraction offers both the more intense Mars mission and a gentler Earth-orbit version, giving the neighborhood one of its most direct links to scientific adventure. Space 220 builds on that same idea from a dining perspective, using an elevator-to-orbit conceit and panoramic space-station visuals to turn a restaurant meal into part of the neighborhood’s futuristic storytelling.

Test Track is the other major pillar. Located in the former World of Motion pavilion, the attraction has always represented EPCOT’s evolving relationship with transportation. Its latest reimagining, presented by General Motors, keeps the high-speed ride system while leaning more deliberately into mobility, automotive design, and the emotional freedom of the open road. In that sense, Test Track still carries some of World of Motion’s DNA, even though the experience is far more kinetic and thrill-oriented.

Historically, World Discovery is fascinating because it sits on some of EPCOT’s most changed ground. This side of the park once included Universe of Energy, World of Motion, Horizons, Wonders of Life, and later Mission: SPACE and Test Track. Few areas better show EPCOT’s transformation from an earnest, pavilion-based world’s fair into a more entertainment-forward park.

Today, World Discovery is EPCOT’s thrill-heavy neighborhood. It may not have the same intellectual purity that longtime fans associate with Future World, but it does preserve the park’s interest in movement, space, technology, and possibility—just through faster, louder, and more contemporary forms of Disney storytelling.
